N80 – Possibly one of the worst UI’s about…

Filed under: Gadgets, UI — kenjun @ 8:18 pm

The Nokia N80 has an unbelievably bad UI.

One, it is so painfully slow that you sometimes think it has just hung.

And two, it sometimes does just hang – which leaves you thinking it’s even slower than it actually is (which is pretty damn slow).

And three – it uses odd terms to describe elements. E.g. I wanted to add an item to the top menu. However, looking for “menu” in the 118 page manual does not cover it. I finally tracked it down via a Google search to “Active standby mode – Standby Display” – what on earth does that mean?!

So to add an item or customise it you have to go to  Tools> Settings > Phone> Standby mode > Active standby

… groan!

Setting up N80 Wifi Access Points

Filed under: Gadgets, UI — kenjun @ 8:04 pm

Boy! Setting this up is tortuous in the extreme.

Finally found it here:

N80 setting for WLAN access point are (Tools->Settings->Connection->Access Points)

as opposed to the myriad other places it could be such as:

connect->conn.mgr->Availab. WLAN

or the cryptic “Connection -> Access Points” as suggested in the unhelpful error message when you try and edit the WLAN details from  Availab. WLAN

Of all the discussions on the net from bewildered users, this seems the clearest:

Gmail uses Vi key combinations!

Filed under: Gmail, Productivity, UI, User Interfaces, Web 2.0 — kenjun @ 8:11 am

Gmail uses Vi key combinations for certain email actions. For example, when looking at your Inbox (or any label or search result):

j – moves you up to the conversation above

k – moves you down to the conversation below

Other (none-Vi) key combinations are:

o – to open up an email

Can see this being very useful in certain graphically intensive jobs such as video / graphic editing:
