Word sometimes doesn’t launch on Intel Macs…

Filed under: MacOSX, Microsoft, Microsoft Bugs — kenjun @ 1:29 pm

The problem: Some PowerPC applications (such as Word) sometimes fail to launch on Intel Macs.

One solution: There is a root process called translated which seems to be launched with PowerPC programs. If this process is killed, then the application can be launched with no troubles. Note that an administrator password is required. translated can be found by opening up the Activity Monitor. Select the process and click on Quit Process.

Filed under: MacOSX — kenjun @ 3:37 pm

In a nutshell, here’s how to run a MacBook with just an external display:

  1. With your MacBook on and running, plug in your external monitor and turn it on
  2. Make sure the MacBook display is in mirror mode.
  3. Close your MacBook. The whole system (including external display will go to sleep).
  4. Plug a USB device into the MacBook (e.g. your mouse) to bring it out of sleep

SnatchEm Widget

Filed under: MacOSX — kenjun @ 12:40 pm

SnatchEm - awesomely handy widget for the Mac. You point it at a URL and it downloads all files available on that page. From the maker:

A Mac OS X Dashboard Widget that used the XMLHttpRequest object in JavaScript to download the source, Regular Expressions to find the file references and the terminal program Curl, built in to BSD and OS X, to download the individual files.
